Phenomenological Study on Parenting Stress Experiences during Child Rearing by a Single Parent Mother with Adolescent Children
Kang Young-Sim

Cheon Seong-Moon
Abstract
The present study aimed to explain the structure of parenting stress of single mothers with adolescent children. To achieve this goal, four single mothers living in B city were chosen and interviewed. Using Giorgi method, a methodology of phenomenological study, 397 semantic units were derived and divided into 19 subcomponents, then finally classified into 7 categories. The results indicated that the rearing stress was aggravated by the following factors: economic distress, burdens from earning life, running the household at the same time, prejudicial views on single parents, and children¡¯s developmental conflicts associated with single parent family. However, it is important to note that mothers reported having children allowed them to be able to see their life from a different perspective and ultimately contribute to one¡¯s transcendence to better life.
